Lángos

This is a very easy Hungarian recipe. Lángos (pronounced langosh) is a very common dish in Hungary and other parts of Central and Eastern Europe. Basically, it is fried dough with toppings.

Ingredients

  • 2½ teaspoons of instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1¾ cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • ¾ cup of grated Swiss cheese
  • sour cream
  • chopped parsley leaves

Directions

Chop up the two garlic cloves. Set aside. Dissolve the salt in some warm water. Sift the flour and add the salty water and the yeast to it. Mix. Knead the dough for about 5 to 7 minutes. Leave it in a bowl and let it set for about 30 to 40 minutes so that it can rise.

Put some flour on a chopping board. Spread the dough onto the board. Using a cooking cutter or a glass, cut out round pieces of the dough. Spread each piece of dough apart with your fingers. Make the edges of the dough pieces thicker than the center portions.

Heat some vegetable oil in a skillet until it is about 350º F. Fry the dough pieces on each side for about 2 minutes or until golden brown. After cooking, put grated cheese, sour cream, parsley, and garlic on them. It is possible to use other toppings as well. You can used bacon, ground sausage, ground beef, or other meats as toppings. This recipe calls for Swiss cheese, but you can substitute Gouda, Feta, or any other cheese.
